A few years before the MCU started dabbling in the multiverse, Sony showed its potential with the acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse animated film, which brought Miles Morales to the big screen along with a bevy of alt-universe spider-heroes. Well, surprise! The Spider-verse is back, and we have a first look at where it’ll be headed.

Sony has dropped an extended first look — basically what looks to be an opening scene — from the film, which is officially titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). Yeah, Part One, which means they’re already working up a Part Two to make a full-on Spider-verse animated trilogy rolling out over the next two years.

The studio teases the film will see Miles back in action, joining forces once again with Gwen Stacy to go on an epic adventure that will take them both across the Spider-verse and introduce a whole new team of Spider-People. So what’s bringing all these heroes together? A new villain more powerful than anything any of them have encountered before.

Check out the clip below:

In the preview clip we see Gwen drop in on Miles, who is chilling in his bedroom. The cutting-edge animation style we know and love is back, along with the sweet dynamic between Miles and Gwen. Once they make the dive into the multiverse, we even get to see Miles tangle with what looks to be Spider-Man 2099, who will be voiced by Oscar Issac in the sequel(s).

The animation style also looks to swing and change even more than in the first, and it all looks as dynamic and surprising as it did when the first film opened in 2018.

“Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one,” writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller told Entertainment Weekly. "Every dimension looks and feels radically different from all the others. They all look like they were drawn by a different artist.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) exclusively hits theaters on October 7, 2022. Part 2 is slated to open at some point in 2023.

Considering fans will have waited about four years between the first Spider-verse film and the sequel, it’s encouraging to see they’re already in production on Part 3 and we won’t have to wait nearly as long to return to this again.
