Fast & Furious 9 revs up a family reunion in destruction-happy Super Bowl teaser

It's a family affair in the zero to a hundred Super Bowl teaser for Fast & Furious 9. The forthcoming entry in the long-running film franchise was originally going to open in theaters last May, but ended up delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. When we meet up with him, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) has settled down, off the grid, with an immediate family, but must come out of retirement when his long lost brother, Jakob (John Cena), shows up for revenge. Sadly, we still don't have confirmation on whether F9 will take the characters to a place they've never been before, that final frontier known as outer space.

Justin Lin, who directed four previous F&F movies, returns to helm this adventure, which follows the events of the franchise's first spinoff feature: Hobbs & Shaw. Michelle Rodriguez ("Letty Ortiz"), Tyrese Gibson ("Roman Pearce"), Chris “Ludacris” Bridges ("Tej Parker"), Jordana Brewster ("Mia Toretto"), Nathalie Emmanuel ("Ramsey"), and Helen Mirren ("Magdalene Shaw") co-star in the film. In addition, Sung Kang's Han Lue is apparently back from the dead.

"The global connection the franchise has with its fans and the respect that the franchise has for its fans is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It allowed me to really look at the absolute analytics of the project through the people who have been working some 20 years on this," Cena told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. "It really is a family atmosphere, there’s a lot of respect for the franchise, there is that expectation to deliver for the fan base, and it’s been like no other experience I’ve been on. You kind of have to earn your respect in so many ways, but once you do you are absolutely, unexpectedly welcomed into the family. It’s been really, really special, and I’m very fortunate."

F9 is the third-to-last F&F chapter, with the tenth installment being broken up into two parts (in the vein of Infinity War and Endgame). Penned by Daniel Casey, Fast & Furious 9 drives into theaters May 28, 2021 — more than a year after its intended release date.
