WIRE Buzz: Enola Holmes teaser; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds going old-school; Lovecraft Country

Fans of mystery-solving teens, Sherlock Holmes, and Stranger Things will have plenty to love in the first footage from Netflix’s Enola Holmes film. 

The movie, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock and Mycroft’s little sister, comes from director Harry Bradbeer — and features Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin as the brothers Holmes. Now fans can see how this star-studded cast aims to take the Sherlock mythos to the world of YA.

Anagrams, huh? Doesn’t Netflix know about Google AKA the Sherlock Holmes of the future? That translates “alone loshme reeebtpms wnettyrhitd” to “Enola Holmes September Twenty-Third.” Boom, case closed. The film, adapted from Nancy Springer’s novels, tracks Enola’s 16th birthday adventure—and not a sweet 16, either, since her mother is missing.

Fans can find out these clues and more when Enola Holmes hits Netflix on Sept. 23.

Next, the Star Trek franchise has seen a lot of growth and tumult over the last few years, with series updating nostalgia (Picard), blazing new trails (Discovery), and exploring new genres (Lower Decks). Now, Strange New Worlds looks to go back to Trekkie basics.

Star Trek executive producer and TV mastermind Alex Kurtzman told Deadline that Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds is going back to episodic storytelling. It makes sense that it’d be a throwback: it follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Spock (Ethan Peck) on the U.S.S. Enterprise a decade before Captain Kirk climbed aboard.

"I think Strange New Worlds, under the guidance of Henry Myers and Akiva Goldsman, is going to be a return, in a way, to TOS," Kurtzman said. "We're going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization. There will be two-parters. There will be larger plot arcs, but it really is back to the model of alien of the week, planet of the week, challenge on the ship of the week with these characters pre-Kirk’s Enterprise.”

Strange New Worlds heads to CBS All Access in the not-too-distant future.

Finally, after premiering last night to a gangbusters response on social media, Lovecraft Country has dropped a teaser to keep all those gibbering fans interested in what eldritch horrors the HBO show has in store later in the season.
