Duffer Brothers say Stranger Things 4 'won't be the end'

By Josh Grossberg
Stranger Things 3

The '80s had to end at some point. And so does Stranger Things. But if the Duffer Brothers have their way, there will indeed be a Season 5.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the masterminds behind the hit Netflix sci-fi horror series intimated that they have more adventures in store for the Hawkins, Indiana gang that will likely take Stranger Things beyond Season 4.

"Season four won't be the end," Ross Duffer said. "We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

Filming on Season 4 had gotten underway in Atlanta before it was abruptly shut down due to the coronavirus. But if there's a silver lining, Matt Duffer acknowledged all that time in quarantine has given them a chance to really hone the story for the current season.

"We've had a lot more time to work on the scripts," he added. "For the first time, we have all the scripts written and we're able to look at it as a whole piece and make adjustments."

The Duffer Brothers have long stated they've already mapped out the ending to the popular show.

David Harbour Jim Hopper Stranger Things

While Netflix hasn't officially announced Stranger Things 5, the good news from the Duffers essentially confirms what star David Harbour, who plays surly sheriff Jim Hopper, said back in July when he teased that at least two more seasons were, uh, in the hopper.

"I will tell you in season 4 and in season 5, if we’re ever able to film again, there is a lot to be revealed around the complexities of [Hopper’s] story, which is really rich, and I’m really excited for you to see," the Emmy-nominated actor told The Gold Derby. "And, it’s really one of these things where I see the series as a whole, because we know the ending, you’ll be able to go back and watch it and see, you know, what we were planting in season 3 that paid off in season 4 and season 5."

As we last saw in Stranger Things 3's cliffhanger ending, the curmudgeonly cop with the Magnum P.I. 'stache seemingly died in a Soviet lab explosion deep under the Starcourt Mall, only to turn up in a post-credit scene on a Russian base in the Kamchatka Peninsula, an apparent prisoner of America's Cold War enemy.

Where the Duffers plan to take the mythology from here is anyone's guess. Production on Stranger Things 4 is expected to resume as early as Sept. 17 depending on whether Netflix and producers implement new safety and health protocols the industry has instituted to protect the cast and crew from COVID.
