Rock on! Dreamworks announces third 'Trolls' movie for November 2023, coming to theaters
The animated film franchise inspired by the famous line of wispy-haired dolls with return!
DreamWorks Animation really can't stop the feeling when it comes to the Trolls film franchise. Variety confirmed Monday that the studio is officially working on a third big screen entry, which is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on Nov. 17, 2023. No details about the project are available at this time, but audiences can probably expect another musical adventure centered around characters inspired by the famous line of wispy-haired dolls.
Released in the fall of 2016, the first Trolls movie (directed by Sky High and Shrek Forever After veteran, Mike Mitchell) was a box office success, bringing in more than $340 million against an estimated production budget of $125 million. In addition, the film's central song — "Can't Stop the Feeling" — scored an Oscar nod for Best Original Song.
Two years later, DreamWorks partnered with Netflix for the kid-friendly series Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, which ran for a total of eight seasons. Peacock now has its own small screen program entitled Trollstopia (four seasons are now streaming). First announced last November, the show is described as "the next chapter in the hair-raising adventures of the Trolls."
The first sequel in the cinematic series — Trolls World Tour — was originally supposed to open in theaters in the spring of 2020. When major theater chains began to shutter their doors in the wake of the growing COVID-19 health crisis, Universal Pictures decided to move the title onto PVOD where it brought in nearly $100 million after a period of just three weeks.
Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick will return to voice their silver screen Trolls characters — Poppy and Branch — in NBC's upcoming Trolls Holiday in Harmony special. Written and directed by the duo of Sean Charmatz (a story artist on Trolls) and Tim Heitz (a storyboard artist on Trolls), Holiday in Harmony is set to feature four original songs.
Kenan Thompson, Rachel Bloom, Ron Funches, Kunal Nayyar, Anderson .Paak, Anthony Ramos, Ester Dean, Walt Dohrn, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Karan Soni also lend their voices to the special, which airs on NBC this Friday (Nov. 26) at 9 p.m. EST. If you miss the network debut, don't worry — it'll be available on Digital and DVD starting Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Gina Shay (producer of the first two movies) and Walt Dohrn (director of World Tour) serve as executive producers.
