'Doctor Strange 2' reshoots rumored to be almost over & focused on more sweet multiverse action

How many Doctor Stranges will we see in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Like many movies, the MCU’s upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has undergone reshoots recently. According to The Hollywood Reporter, those reshoots are wrapping up this week, and there was a major reason why the production added six weeks of shooting time.

Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, said a few weeks ago that the reshoots were because COVID restrictions slowed everything down. "We're in the middle of reshoots and we're working incredibly hard to make a schedule work to realize the full potential of the film — bits we want to do better,” Cumberbatch said, adding that certain parts “were just impossible to do on the day because logistics, COVID, etc."

According to THR, however, there is another potential reason for the reshoots — the Marvel powers that be wanted some more of that sweet multiverse action.

We’ve already gotten hints of the multiverse in Disney+’s Loki and this weekend's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and according to one of THR’s sources, Marvel wanted to have “more fun with the multiverse” by including more cameos and more character introductions in the film.

Obviously, this is all speculation, of course. But multiversal speculation can be fun!

We can also speculate a bit more if we talk about the new Multiverse of Madness trailer, which currently is only available as a post-credit scene after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Stop reading now if you don’t want anything from that trailer spoiled!

**SPOILER WARNING: Spoilers for the new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer below!**

You good? Great!

One thing we saw in the new trailer is Doctor Strange talking to … a slightly more sinister-looking Doctor Strange. This confirms that Multiverse of Madness, like Loki, will have at least two versions of a major character. Perhaps the reshoots were to have Cumberbatch add more versions of himself? Or maybe other characters like Wong (Benedict Wong) get additional variants as well.

This is all mere guessing, of course. We’ll have to wait until the Sam Raimi-directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres in theaters on May 6, 2022 and see for ourselves!
