DC Universe announces DCYou contest, BizarroTV anthology, Harley Quinn debut date
It's not all about the panels at New York Comic Con. In fact, DC Universe (the comic, TV, and film streaming service) saved its biggest news for a press event. The home of Titans, Doom Patrol, the only season of Swamp Thing (sadly), the upcoming Harley Quinn series, and more has been in a bit of a corporate flux as part of AT&T's WarnerMedia empire. As HBO Max looms, as well as competitors like AppleTV+ and Disney+, it's unclear where DC Universe fits into the larger streaming structure. So how does the future of DC Universe fit in with the larger streaming wars?
The answer is more. More shows, more comics, and more ways for the community to interact with the DC content they love. Speaking to press tonight at an event attended by SYFY WIRE, DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee introduced two new series coming to the second year of DCU: DCYou Unscripted and BizarroTV.
The former is a competition show focused around pitching unscripted video content for the service. Think Project Greenlight, but for a show about superheroes. Lee will serve as a judge on the program, which will see three of its finalists produce pilots with one winner getting their own show on DCU.
BizarroTV is an anthology, mixed-media series promising to explore the stranger edges of the DC universe. Ambush Bug, Space Cabbie, the Creeper, and Slam Bradley all get roles in this oddball show that promises a mix of live-action, animation, and even puppets.
Finally, there was the news for the shows fans had already heard of. Stargirl has completed principal photography and is on its way to premiere in 2020, while Harley Quinn's executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker finally announced a release date of Nov. 29.
Harley also got a new comic (with cover) announced: Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey from Amanda Conner:
