Marvel dealing up new Gambit comic from original creator Chris Claremont
The iconic X-Men scribe has more stories to tell in the mutant-verse.
One of the biggest creative names in X-Men comics history is heading back to spin up a fresh batch of Marvel mutant stories. Marvel Comics has revealed that iconic X-Men scribe Chris Claremont is currently hard at work on a new Gambit series, which is slated to launch next year.
Details are super light, but Claremont will be penning the new series alongside artist Sid Kotian. Marvel announced the new series with an ace-up-its-sleeve tweet that, not surprisingly, elicited plenty of enthusiasm from longtime Claremont fans who’ve been pining for more X-Men stories from one of the franchise’s most prolific writers.
One early detail Marvel did share was a single peek at a new Gambit cover illustration, courtesy of writer/artist Whilce Portacio.

Beyond that, little more is known about where Claremont’s new series will take the card-slinging character he originally created with artist Jim Lee. A Louisiana-born mutant endowed with the power to summon and wield raw kinetic energy, Gambit (aka Remy Etienne LeBeau) made his first comic book appearance in 1990, showing up back-to-back in The Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 and The Uncanny X-Men #266.
Claremont became synonymous with X-Men’s rise to phenomenal pop culture currency thanks to his 16-year career at the writing helm of Uncanny X-Men, which spanned from 1975 to 1991. During that time, he created and introduced dozens of new mutants into X-Men lore…including both Gambit and Rogue, whose recurring romantic dalliances became a fan favorite subplot. In the post-Claremont era, the pair even ended up getting married in a spur-of-the-moment, bait-and-switch wedding ceremony in Marc Guggenheim’s X-Men Gold #30 (2018).
There’s no way to know yet which pieces of Gambit lore Claremont might hold or fold as the new comic gets set to reshuffle the deck, but at least we won’t have to wait too long to find out. Marvel Comics’ new Gambit series brings Claremont back to his X-Men writing roots when it debuts sometime in 2022.
