Chosen One of the Day: The Interpol puppet in 'Evil'

By Preeti Chhibber
Interpol Evil hero

I’ll be honest, when I decided to pick the Interpol puppet from the band’s 2004 music video for “Evil” as today’s Chosen One, I probably hadn’t watched the video since 2004. And now that I’ve rewatched in 2020, I’ve got one word for you: teeth.

Set against the backdrop of a vicious car accident, the lead singing puppet croons out the early lyrics while firemen and paramedics rush to save lives and put out fires. The puppet’s skin is sallow, his eyes are terrifyingly wide, his nose more Voldemort than human — no danger of the uncanny valley here. Except those teeth. My god.

It’s not quite “oh God did they use human-teeth to make this puppet"-level but, like, did they
Maybe it’s the combination of puppet teeth and puppet tongue?

As the video goes on, the puppet gets taken in the ambulance to the hospital and, buddy, turns out I did not remember this video at all. The animatronics behind that horrifying, jaundiced visage are pretty incredible, though.

But then it’s time for the coup de grâce!

An operating room puppet dance that’s part Lydia Deetz at the end of Beetlejuice and part the stuff of actual nightmares because look at that pale, waxy body moving in ways that shouldn’t be allowed. It’s like if Kermit was going to haunt you (but arguably not as scary as the ghost of Christmas past).

Any way, you’re all welcome and I hope you enjoyed this absolutely normal, and not awful, trip down memory lane with me to simpler times of sad, wide-eyed puppets with floppy hair dancing in the OR.
