Chosen One of the Day: Brie Larson's custom Captain Marvel tracksuit
Brie Larson got her Hollywood break when Juicy Couture tracksuits, Von Dutch trucker caps, and Uggs were the leisure uniform choice; waistbands sat hipbone low and rhinestones proudly decorated many a butt. The early and mid-00s saw a lot of questionable fashion choices including the ubiquitous pink matching velour as worn by Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Amy Poehler in Mean Girls.
However, in 2014, it was announced that Juicy Couture was shuttering all stores in the United States. The iced latte brigade had moved on. They were about to become a relic, joining the bedazzled Sidekick and bootcut jeans for a very special 2000s style "In Memoriam."
Cut to 2019, the brand has recovered and there is new must-have tracksuit.
When Brie Larson surprised Captain Marvel theatergoers at the AMC cinema in Clifton Commons, New Jersey during the record-smashing opening weekend, she rocked up in custom Juicy Couture sweats based on her character’s superhero attire. If this is how mid-'00s style nostalgia is going to be interpreted and styled, then get me to the front of this particular comeback line.
Not only does this look cool af, but it is also perfect for flying in. No, I am not talking about Carol's more than impressive abilities in either a plane or her special powers. Rather, I am thinking ahead to the eight-hour flight I am taking next week and wishing I had this to wear.
This is not the silhouette or fit of the old Juicy Couture matching separates, which threatened to reveal exactly what underwear you had on. The butt doesn't appear bedazzled — though it would have been tempting to stitch the word "Captain" across the back — so we truly have moved on (but I would still pay good money even it did).
If you’d told me 15 years ago I would be lusting over a matching Juicy Couture tracksuit, I'd probably have suggested you’d had too much caffeine for the day. Instead, this plush blue, red and yellow number is all I can think about. Hopefully, the powers that be at Juicy Couture will take note as this is way too good to be custom-only. Superhero style has never looked so comfortable.
