Away: Hilary Swank heads to Mars in emotional first trailer for new Netflix series
Break out your favorite box of Kleenex because Netflix just dropped the official trailer for Away, a highly emotional and Interstellar-y drama about humankind's first manned mission to Mars.
Hilary Swank (I Am Mother) headlines the cast as Emma Green, the leader of an international astronaut crew, who must leave behind her daughter (Talitha Bateman) and husband (Josh Charles) at a time when they need her the most. Executive produced by Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), the new series looks to explore our penchant for resilience in the face of great sacrifice.
Andrew Hinderaker (a writing vet of Penny Dreadful and Pure Genius) created the project, which is showrun by Jessica Goldberg (Parenthood, The Path). Ray Panthaki, Ato Essandoh, Mark Ivanir, and Vivian Wu round out the principal cast. Per Netflix, Away was directly inspired by an Esquire article about astronaut Scott Kelly. The article's author, Chris Jones, is a writer/producer on the series.

"The writers wrote such an immensely layered human being in [Emma]. I love that the Commander is a woman and that’s not the drama of the story," Swank told SYFY WIRE about her character. "The drama is a story about richly different racial backgrounds, people working towards a goal but also the gravitational pull to their families on Earth, so it's also a love story. It's a dream come true of Emma's to lead a mission to mars, and being an unexpected mother and these other humans on this mission learn to break through stereotypes to connect us all."
Goldberg, Jason Katims, Matt Reeves, Andrew Hinderaker, Edward Zwick, Hilary Swank, Adam Kassan, and Jeni Mulein also serve as executive producers. Mike Massimino, a NASA astronaut and the first human to tweet from space, was brought on as a consultant.
Away blasts off with its first 10 episodes Friday, Sep. 4.
