Artists Alley: Annie Stoll sketches Sabine from Star Wars Rebels
Three years ago, Annie Stoll illustrated Star Wars Rebels: Sabine: My Rebel Sketchbook. It was an in-universe diary for Sabine, written by Daniel Wallace while Stoll provided the art as if her images were drawn by Sabine herself. When SYFY WIRE caught up with Stoll for the latest installment of Artists Alley, she readily chose to sketch Sabine again. Stoll also told us that she feels a connection to Sabine.
"I really love this character a lot," said Stoll. "What I really like about [Sabine] is that she uses art as a way to express herself. And I very much relate to that."
Stoll also reminded us that she had a chance to draw Sabine again in last year's Women of the Galaxy book. Additionally, she shared a story about how she got the chance to draw Star Wars characters professionally.
"For me, it's one of the coolest things ever," related Stoll. "I still kind of pinch myself every day about that. A while back, I went to New York Comic Con and actually crashed a pencilers and inkers portfolio review. They were looking for people who have skills that I do not possess, but I thought, 'You know what? Somebody there does graphic design. I'll go and I'll ask. What's the worst thing someone can tell you? No? You move on.'"
From there, Stoll told us how she landed her first gig by persistence. She also stressed the importance of finding yourself as an artist.
"When I was younger, I used to think, 'Oh man, I don't draw perfectly straight lines. I really want to be this amazing inker,'" noted Stoll. "I just wasn’t great at it, and then I kind of realized I've just got to be myself. I'm kind of messy, and that's all right."
