Arrow is saving that ‘Elseworlds’ cliffhanger for next year in ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’

The CW’s most recent DC crossover event featured a major cliffhanger surrounding the Green Arrow, but fans shouldn’t expect that thread to be picked up anytime soon. As expected, it was all about setting up next season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event — and they’re apparently saving it until then.

Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz told Comic Book Resources that Oliver’s off-screen deal with the Monitor will “more impact him next season,” adding, “we're not going to see too much of that” throughout the show’s current season. As fans will remember, the team learned that Flash and Supergirl would likely die in “Elseworlds,” so Oliver met with the Monitor to cut a deal to save them. The details of that deal? We still don’t know, though it stands to reason he may have sacrificed his own life for theirs in an effort to ensure they survive until the Crisis arrives.

The framing made it clear this lingering plot point was a big one, but considering “Elseworlds” largely existed as a launching point for next year’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Schwartz says they won’t be pulling on that thread until a lot closer to next year’s event. It makes sense, but it's still a shame fans will have to wait so long to find out what agreement Oliver made behind closed doors.

New episodes of Arrow air Monday nights on The CW. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is scheduled to air next season in the fall.
