Aquaman swims past Wonder Woman at global box office, could pass Batman v Superman next
James Wan's Aquaman became one of the highest-grossing DCEU films this week when it surpassed $822 million at the global box office, reports Variety.
This figure placed the feature above Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, which lassoed a little over $821 million during its theatrical run in 2017. Domestically, Aquaman also broke the $200 million mark in North America, but it still needs $197 or so million to beat Wonder Woman's total American gross of $412 million.
On its current course (that's some nautical humor for you), Aquaman may even reach $1 billion by the end of its time in theaters all over the world. As such, it could become DC's most successful movie since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, which took in $1.08 billion internationally.
Before we get there, however, Arthur Curry still has some heavy lifting to do, needing to beat out The Dark Knight ($534 domestically and $1 billion globally) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330 domestically and $873 million globally).
Whether or not the underwater adventure manages to top all other DC projects, it's good to know the DCEU is not pure box office poison and can still bring in audiences after Suicide Squad and Justice League. With Shazam!, Wonder Woman 1984, and Birds of Prey looming just over the horizon, this comic book cinematic universe has a chance of coming back in a very big way. Once the fallout of Avengers: Endgame has settled, Warner Bros. and DC may have the chance to step out of Thanos' shadow for a short while.
