More 'Amazing Spider-Man'? Andrew Garfield says he's 'definitely open' to return after 'No Way Home'
Andrew Garfield with a bit of, ahem, amazing news about how he feels about Spider-Man.
Don't count out Sony's Amazing Spider-Man just yet. After nearly a year full of denials, Andrew Garfield finally owned up to his co-starring gig in No Way Home during an exclusive conversation with Variety (his first major interview about his return to the Marvel Universe since the movie's wide theatrical release last month). Considered to be one of the movie's bright spots, the actor's reprisal of Peter Parker garnered a great deal of critical and audience acclaim, with many fans now clamoring for a conclusion to the Garfield trilogy.
"I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right," he said when asked whether he'd be interested in another entry in The Amazing Spider-Man series. "Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself."
As it stands, though, Garfield's extra-dimensional iteration of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler got some much-needed emotional closure during the climactic battle at the Statue of Liberty. When MJ (Zendaya) falls from the scaffolding, Garfield's Peter immediately springs into action, making sure history doesn't repeat itself and that she doesn't befall the same fate as Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy.
"We were shooting for two weeks, Tobey [Maguire] and I, but I think we managed to achieve something that is not just showing up and going, 'Hi! Bye!' My Spider-Man got to save his younger brother’s romantic relationship, potentially," Garfield continued. "And to heal the most traumatic moment of his own life through doing it for his younger brother. Making sure that he didn’t have the same fate, there’s something cosmically beautiful about that. It meant getting a second chance at saving Gwen."
He added: "I’m just really, really grateful that I got to tie up some loose ends for the Peter that I was playing. I love that character and I’m grateful that I got to work with these incredible actors, this incredible director, and Marvel in conjunction with Sony. It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me. There was so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him. And also really supporting [Tom Holland’s] Peter, and honoring his character completing that trilogy, not distracting or detracting from it."
The actor was so overjoyed to be inhabiting the character again, that he couldn't hold back the unbridled affection he felt for his fellow Spider-Men, leading to one of the film's most memorable lines of dialogue. "There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them," Garfield said. "That was just me loving them."
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters everywhere.
