All the sci-fi TV and movies coming to streaming in August 2020

By Trent Moore
Lucifer

The coronavirus pandemic might have most productions still shut down, but don’t worry, streaming services still have plenty of new stuff on the docket this month. From a handsome devil to Zoom-created horror films, let’s dig in.

The fifth season of Lucifer finally hits Netflix, and the streamer also has some A-list acquisitions in the first two seasons of Cobra Kai and the series run of The Legend of Korra. The latest season of the Tales of Arcadia animated series is also on the way, this time focused on the Wizards of that fantasy world. Quibi, which is still a thing, also has a high-profile launch this week with The Fugitive, a genre-adjacent thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland (24).

Hulu doesn’t have much on the originals front, but it does have Season 5 of Blindspot; a treasure trove of classic Star Trek films; and the recent family-friendly adventure Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Disney+ has a new original film this month with the animated feature Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe, plus a few new episodes of Muppets Now. Amazon Prime has Christopher Nolan’s Inception and a few fun films, along with a series look back at the first season of The Boys.

But that’s not all! Shudder has some new horror flicks, Peacock still has plenty on its deep shelf, and DC Universe is acquiring Season 2 of SYFY’S Krypton.

Check out the full rundown below and let us know what you’ll be bingeing.

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

Lucifer (Season 5): Fans have waited a long time for Tom Ellis to get back in action as the devil helping solve crimes in Los Angeles, and finally Lucifer is back with new episodes this month. The show has turned into one of Netflix’s biggest hits in recent years, and already has another (final) season on the way.

Cobra Kai (Seasons 1-2): A third season of the hit YouTube premium original will be headed to Netflix in the future, but for now fans can catch up on the first two crane-kicking seasons when they roll onto Netflix. The series is a continuation of the classic Karate Kid films, and should become an even bigger hit with a fresh audience able to find it on Netflix.

The Legend of Korra (Series): If you missed it the first time around, the acclaimed Avatar sequel series The Legend of Korra is headed to Netflix. Even better? Both Avatar and Korra are both available — so you can catch up on the whole saga in one stop.

Wizards: Tales of Arcadia: The latest animated series in Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia series finally arrives, picking up the adventures from Trollhunters and 3Below. The show is a wild, fantasy/sci-fi adventure series that has done an absolutely insane amount of worldbuilding over the past few years. Now the wizarding side of this world is coming to life.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

Classic Star Trek films: If you’re wanting to beat the heat, stay in, and spend some time in a future far better than our present — Hulu is here to help. A boatload of old-school Star Trek films, from The Motion Picture to Insurrection, will be there to revisit and discover.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold: The recent kid-friendly adventure hit is coming to streaming, in case you’re looking for an upgrade from the animated adventures. The film was a crowd-pleaser when it came to family-friendly fare, and should be a nice distraction in this quarantine time where new-ish films are scarce.

Blindspot Season 5: This series has quietly been building a wild, twisty action thriller for half a decade — and now the adventure comes to an end. The final season just ended, and quick as can be, it’s headed to Hulu. So if you’ve been waiting to see where all those mysterious tattoos were leading, now we know.

DISNEY PLUS

HIGHLIGHTS

X-Men: Disney is slowly starting to dig deeper into the deep bench of content it acquired in the Fox deal, and this month that includes the OG X-Men film that helped kick off the modern-day superhero film era. This flick spawned a massive universe of sequels and spinoffs that ran for decades (and are technically still running, as we await the release of The New Mutants).

Alice Through the Looking Glass: Tim Burton’s 2016 Disney blockbuster set in the world of Alice in Wonderland is coming to streaming, carrying on the A-list fantasy starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Rhys Ifans, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe: The hit children’s series came to an end a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean Phineas and Ferb’s endless summer is coming to an end (with the film technically set before the series finale). This animated sequel finds the two brothers traveling across the galaxy to rescue their sister Candace.

AMAZON PRIME

HIGHLIGHTS

Prime Rewind:  Inside The Boys - Amazon Original Special: Season 2 doesn’t arrive until September, but in the meantime the streamer is dropping a look back at the first season to get fans primed (no pun intended) for the show’s return.

Inception: Though Christopher Nolan’s Tenet finally has a release plan (it’s tentatively set to open in early September in the U.S.), the jury’s still out on exactly when fans will get to see it. In the meantime, Nolan’s twisty thriller Inception will be coming to Prime — which should make for a perfect distraction to dig back into Nolan’s resume.

DC UNIVERSE

HIGHLIGHTS

Krypton Season 2: The short-lived SYFY series followed Superman’s grandfather in a universe where a bit of time travel is aiming to derail the future of the DC universe. The show was a wild action series, featuring DC characters like Adam Strange, General Zod, and Doomsday along the way.

Doom Patrol Season 2 Finale: The acclaimed DC anti-superhero series wraps up its second season this month, with episodes rolling out on DC Universe and HBO Max. But make no mistake — Doom Patrol is an OG DC Universe series, and is fantastically weird in all the best ways.

HBO MAX

HIGHLIGHTS

An American Pickle (HBO Max Original Film): One of HBO Max's first high-profile original films arrives, with Seth Rogen playing a man out of time — after being frozen in pickle brine. Yes, seriously. The film is based on Simon Rich’s New Yorker novella and stars Rogen as a struggling 1919 laborer who wakes up 100 years in the "future."

Harley Quinn (Animated Series): If you missed the Harley Quinn animated series during its original run on DC Universe, you’re in luck — both seasons are coming to HBO Max, where hopefully a whole lot more fans can discover it. It’s hilarious, bloody, violent, and foul-mouthed. It also puts a surprisingly ambitious twist on the DC universe.

Batman Films: It’s no secret HBO Max has a deep catalog of films, and it’s dropping a whole lot of Batman stuff to entice fans this month. So kick back, start with Tim Burton’s originals, and watch the epic collapse as the franchise rolls downhill from movie to movie. Thankfully, Batman Begins is there to get things back on track.

QUIBI

The upstart, mobile streaming service is dropping one its biggest genre-adjacent titles this week in the reboot of the classic thriller The Fugitive. The short-form series goes live on August 3 and stars Kiefer Sutherland (24) as a cop on the hunt for Boys Holbrook’s man on the run, after he’s falsely accused of setting off a bomb in a Los Angeles suburb.

PEACOCK

NBC Universal’s new streaming service launched last month, and is still loaded with lots of fun stuff. The high-profile new original series Brave New World is already live, and the service has a deep bench of sci-fi fare, including the original SYFY run of Battlestar Galactica, shows like Eureka, and blockbusters like Jurassic Park and The Matrix. Even cooler? A ton of that stuff is available for free, with even more shows and movies unlocked at the subscription level.
