Adventure Time: Distant Lands has BMO saving the day in expectedly strange first trailer

What time is it? Adventure Time! After coming to an end in 2018, the goofball Cartoon Network phenomenon is making its return on HBO Max with a presumably odd and affecting series of four specials that fall under the banner of Adventure Time: Distant Lands.

The first teaser trailer for the debut special — "BMO" — showcases the sweet, anthropomorphic Game Boy-like console (voiced by Niki Yang) who lives with Finn and Jake. In his solo outing, BMO crash-lands on "a doomed alien world" nearing the verge of collapse. Vowing to help save its citizens, he dons a sheriff's hat and embarks on a quest across the strange environment, which is less of a planet and more of a floating space station studded with different biospheres.

Adventure Time may have been gone from our lives for the last two two years, but it hasn't lost any of its luster from the transformation into Distant Lands. It's good to know that the upcoming adventures won't dispense with any of the vibrant charm, bizarre visuals, and goober-ish humor that made Pendleton Ward's animated series so popular in the first place.

The next three specials (titled "Obsidian," "Wizard City," and "Together Again") are set to bring back even more familiar faces, like Marceline (Olivia Olson), Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), Peppermint Butler (Steve Little), and — of course — the dynamic duo that is Finn (Jeremy Shada) and Jake (John DiMaggio). Each story will check in on these characters after the epic series finale.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands' "BMO" doesn't have a set premiere date yet. The trailer only promises that it's "coming soon" to HBO Max. The subscription streaming platform goes live Wednesday, May 27.
