Nathan Drake has finally found his new live-action director. According to a report from Variety, 10 Cloverfield Lane's Dan Trachtenberg has been chosen to helm a movie adaptation of Naughty Dog's Uncharted video game series. The up-and-coming filmmaker is taking over for Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), who had to bow out of the Sony/Columbia-produced project over scheduling conflicts with Free Guy.

The film will play out as an origin story for famed treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, who is to be portrayed by Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home). Per the aforementioned report, the plot will revolve around Drake's first-ever encounter with his cigar-chomping friend, Victor Sullivan.

This casting choice will likely come as a disappointment for fans holding out hope for Nathan Fillion (Firefly) to take on the role of the central, Indiana Jones-esque character. Fillion recently starred in a high-end Uncharted fan film alongside Stephen Lang (Mortal Engines). But, it could be a clever move to differentiate from the games, by focusing on an untold tale of a young Drake.

A concrete date for the start of production hasn't been locked down, but the project could start filming before the end of the year. That's the hope, anyway. Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker are responsible for the most recent version of the screenplay, but that could change as the months go on and more details are finalized.

For what it's worth, the current IMDB page for the movie credits Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) as screenwriter and includes Bryan Cranston as a rumored member of the cast.

A second entry to J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield Cinematic Universe at Paramount," 10 Cloverfield Lane received rave reviews from critics and racked up more than $110 million at the global box office against an estimated budget of $13-$15 million. While the scope of the story was small, the cast was comprised of big names: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr.
