It's the year 2016, and there’s some weird stuff going on. All across the world, cell signals are jammed, man-made, airborne devices are being suspended and lowered in mid-air, the sky is fogging over, and a fleet of enormous spaceships are blocking out the sun.

The Overlords, led by Karellen, the alien Supervisor for Earth, has come with a promise of Utopia - a world without fear, hunger, poverty or war.

And later, an alien emissary visits Ricky Stormgren, a regular guy with a regular life, at his farmhouse in Missouri to deliver a personal invitation onto the ship. Up until this point, Ricky has led a quiet life with his photographer wife, Ellie.

Karellen and his crew use people's dead relatives, and elements of their past lives, to assure the living that "there's nothing to fear" - except for maybe your dead relatives who've come back from the dead, but we digress...

In a virtual space that mimics Ricky’s honeymoon suite (from his first marriage that left him a widow), Karellen asks the farmer to be his prophet on Earth to assure the other humans that The Overlords come in peace.

Ricky takes up Karellen’s request to be his spokesperson on Earth, starting with a press junket at the White House.

A testament to The Overlord's power? While standing up for his addict mother against her macho dealer, a young boy named Milo, who's in a wheelchair, is shot and killed. But wait for it... The Overlords are into grace so Milo is resurrected, and given back the use of his legs. Milo is a whiz kid who's crazy into science and wants to learn all that he can about The Overlords and their mission.

While we were busy being impressed by The Overlords' power to save a young kid, a journalist named Wainwright is less than jazzed about their presence on Earth. Wainwright and his recently formed Freedom League of skeptics are also not into how everyone is feeding into The Overlords' promises. Wainwright even tries to intimidate Ricky into taking back control of the planet from them. Karellen broadcasts the tango all around the world, which only serves to quell the voice of any other non-believers on the planet.

When Ricky (not so politely) declines Wainwright’s offer, he’s bombarded with gunfire. But the Overlords have decreed this is not their prophet’s day to die, and stop the bullets in mid-air.

Ricky's grateful that Karellen saved his life, but he's also really curious about what he looks like. You see, throughout their encounters, Karellen speaks to Ricky behind a glass mirror (police interrogation room style), his rationale being that the world was "not ready" to see him yet. So, Ricky gets the idea to snap a quick photo of the mirror to see if he can catch a glimpse that way. He does, and realizes Karellen WAS right to stay hidden.

After more than a decade of Utopia, where the world has united under one goverment (The World Federation), Karellen reveals himself to the world. Meet Karellen and his cloven hooves. And his red tail. And his wings. And horns. Has the devil arrived on Earth?
