Golden Globes 2019: Genre underperforms with 3 wins; Black Panther fails to acquire any gold

The 76th Golden Globes were not kind to genre projects, awarding only three wins to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Best Animated Feature), First Man (Best Original Score, Justin Hurwitz), and Killing Eve (Best Actress, Drama, Sandra Oh).

The biggest heartbreak of the evening was the fact that Marvel Studios' Black Panther took home no awards, despite being nominated for Best Drama Picture, Best Original Song ("All the Stars"), and Best Score (Ludwig Göransson).

In the end, Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody surprised everyone by taking home the top Drama prize of the evening.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film made history by being the first superhero feature to be nominated for a Drama Golden Globe, a development that had many hoping that it would go on to snag Oscar gold. While that's still very possible, the complete lack of wins is not a very good omen for the Academy Awards (to be held February 24).

Another Disney-owned movie, Mary Poppins Returns, also did not win anything, despite nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Emily Blunt), Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Best Original Score - Motion Picture (Marc Shaiman), and Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. However, the gathered audience erupted into a standing ovation when Dick Van Dyke arrived onstage with Blunt to talk a little about the film.

Some of the other major snubs included NBC's The Good Place, HBO's Westworld, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, TNT's The Alienist, Starz's Outlander, and Amazon's Homecoming.

Unfortunately, Kristen Bell, Thandie Newton, Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Daniel Brühl, Caitriona Balfe, and Julia Roberts were not rewarded for their genre performances in 2018.

While First Man took home Best Score, Claire Foy lost out on Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her portrayal of Neil Armstrong's wife, Janet. On that score (no pun intended), John Krasinski's A Quiet Place (Marco Beltrami) and Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs (Alexandre Desplat) did not win the musically-centric Golden Globe.

Acclaimed actor Jeff Bridges received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement thanks to his prolific involvement in iconic features like Tron (the first movie to use extensive CGI) and the first Iron Man, which kicked off the entire MCU.

When Harrison Ford showed up after to present the next award, he got a huge laugh upon saying: “Nobody told me I had to follow Jeff Bridges."

Other highlights of the awards ceremony include: an alternate version of the Walmart grocery pick-up ad that included Fred Flinstone and Cinderella's pumpkin carriage; William H. Macy's Arrival parody Pepsi commercial; and an HBO trailer that showed new footage of Game of Thrones' eighth season and Damon Lindelof's Watchmen series.
