Game of Thrones fans just stumbled across a tragic little easter egg planted years ago

Major spoilers pertaining to season seven of Games of Thrones below.

You may recall the rather horrifying death of Princess Shireen Baratheon in Game of Thrones Season 5, and if you don’t, well, we’re sorry for reminding you about it now.

She was of course the sweetly innocent daughter and only living child of Stannis and Selyse, until her untimely demise, and the reason for bringing it all back up is that fans of the show have noticed that she dropped a major plot-clue-slash-easter-egg way back then that fans are just discovering now.

After being shunned by her parents for her scaly visage, Shireen (Kerry Ingram) struck up a frankly adorable friendship with Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) and began to teach him how to read. Now, some eagle-eyed Reddit users have picked up on the significance of the first word he learned: “Aegon.”

“When you see ‘A,’ ‘E,’ and ‘G’ together like that, it sounds like ‘egg.’” Shireen tells him. “And the title of the whole book is A History of Aegon the Conqueror.” Yup, that’s right, she was (sort of) teaching him the name of Aegon Targaryen – the actual son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, formerly known as Jon Snow.

Actor Liam Cunningham spoke to the Huffington Post about the scene, saying: “Yeah, they’re very good at that sort of thing. David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] plant little easter eggs there if you want to see them.” See what he did there?
