All the sci-fi TV and movies streaming in January 2021

By Trent Moore
WandaVision

With more and more streaming services, it seems like there's always more and more stuff to stream — and 2021 looks to start off with a ton of new shows and movies for genre fans. From dinosaurs to karate, and Marvel heroes to Howard the Duck, let's dig in.

Netflix, the granddaddy of them all, has Season 3 of its extremely-hyped new original series Cobra Kai (recently acquired from YouTube). The service is also rolling out a new season of its Jurassic World animated series Camp Cretaceous. As far as big library additions, the final season of SYFY's acclaimed fantasy drama The Magicians comes to streaming. Disney+ arguably has the biggest debut this month, with its new MCU TV series WandaVision making its long-awaited premiere. It'll be dropping new episodes weekly, so stay plugged in.

Hulu is fairly movie-heavy this month, with highlights such as Blade Runner: The Final Cut and the Austin Powers trilogy. Peacock has the Jurassic Park trilogy, Howard the Duck (yep, that one), the Sam Raimi horror flick Drag Me to Hell, and The Office (no, it's not genre, but still worth noting). HBO Max is adding a ton of stuff, including a bunch of material from sister-service DC Universe.

Amazon Prime has a few fresh movies in its catalog; CBS All Access has new episodes of Star Trek Discovery and The Stand; Shudder has fresh horror stuff (surprise!); Tubi has a few fun freebies; and Quibi ... doesn't exist anymore (sorry).

Let's dig in!

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

Cobra Kai Season 3: In a welcome surprise crane kick to the binge schedule, Netflix is dropping the third season of Cobra Kai on New Year's Day — a week earlier than originally planned. The new season finds the former Karate Kid foes as unlikely allies as they try to put the pieces back together after that wild, school-wide fight that left Miguel paralyzed and Robbie in legal trouble at the end of Season 2.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 2 (Netflix Original): The animated extension of the Jurassic World universe ended with one major surprise cliffhanger, but thankfully it's one that'll get fully explored in Season 2. The second season picks up with the young survivors now essentially abandoned on Isla Nublar and trying to find a way to stay alive as the dinosaurs fully take over the island.

The Magicians: Season 5: The acclaimed SYFY series came to an end earlier this year, and now you can revisit the final season in binge form to laugh, cry and cry some more as the tale of young magicians unravels with everything from a fantasy world to the real world at stake. The full series run is a gorgeous, surprising journey. Think of it as Harry Potter for adults in all the good ways.

DISNEY+

HIGHLIGHTS

WandaVision: It's the beginning of a brand new era for the MCU as the first new Marvel show hits Disney+. This series picks up with big screen heroes Scarlet Witch and Vision as they're somehow living a suburban life in a TV sitcom-esque world of Wanda's creation. This looks like a wild, fantastical chapter to kick off the first slate of next-level MCU shows and should definitely help Disney+ stay in the water cooler (Zoom cooler?) conversation with The Mandalorian off the schedule for a while.

Marvel Studios: Legends: Need a primer on your MCU history and character rundowns? This new series should help. It's basically a docu-series digging into different Marvel heroes and characters, so you don't forget the high points in Marvel and MCU history. The first two characters up? Scarlet Witch and Vision, just in time for WandaVision.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

Blade Runner: The Final Cut: It's never a bad time to revisit this timeless sci-fi classic, and now with the definitive director's cut from Ridley Scott — this is the only cut of the film where Scott retained complete creative control. It took decades for him to finally get a chance to show off his exact take on this story, but it was well worth the wait.

Austin Powers (Trilogy): We still have a while to wait until the real-life 007 returns in No Time to Die later in 2021, but until then, Austin Powers can help fill the void. The full trilogy of spy comedy films starring Mike Myers is hitting HBO Max. Come for the laughs, stay for Beyonce and all those insane cameos.

PEACOCK

HIGHLIGHTS

Jurassic Park (Trilogy): Between Camp Cretaceous on Netflix and the new Jurassic World sequel on the horizon, it's not a bad time to be a dinosaur fan. But if you're looking to revisit the classics, the original Jurassic Park trilogy is roaring onto Peacock.

Drag Me to Hell: It might not get mentioned in the same breath as some of his other horror classics, but this 2009 horror flick from Sam Raimi is one heck of a great time. The story picks up with a young woman who is cursed — and goes fantastically off the rails from there. It was a modest critical and box office hit at the time, but if you missed it, it's well worth a watch.

Howard the Duck: Sure, it's awful — but it's the good kind of awful. He's since made a formal return to the MCU in cameo form thanks to James Gunn, but never forget Howard's infamous first foray to the big screen. The 1986 film was a box office and critical disaster but has since gained some love as a cult classic. Lea Thompson is still great, some of the jokes still land, and yeah... that's about all you can say.

The Office (Complete Series): No, it's not a genre series — but it's worth a mention anyway, thanks to the crossover appeal (mostly due to Dwight's love of BSG, and the creation of Recyclops). The beloved NBC sitcom, a longtime streaming staple of Netflix, is shifting over to Peacock this month. One cool perk? They'll be rolling out "super-fan" episodes, that have been beefed up with deleted scenes and never-before-seen goodies that should keep the show fresh for longtime fans who have already binged it a few thousand times.

HBO MAX

HIGHLIGHTS

A bunch of DC Universe stuff: The migration is well underway now, with HBO Max absorbing most of the back catalog that made sister-service DC Universe so handy in the first place. HBO Max is adding the full series runs of shows like Batman Beyond and Batman: The Animated Series, along with several Batman animated films, Hellboy animated films, and more.

Babylon 5: If you've been jonesing to revisit this acclaimed sci-fi series, it'll never be easier than now. The early-to-mid 1990s sci-fi space series was one of the most ambitious ever made at the time, and help pioneer the concept of serialized television storytelling. It also created a huge, sprawling sci-fi world all its own. It helped create the genre as we know it, and it's well worth a watch.

The Mummy & The Mummy Returns: Despite efforts to recapture the magic, few monster movies are as good as the originals — and by that we mean the 1999-2001 Mummy film series, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. They were bright, fun, scary, funny, and an absolute blast. Plus, thanks to the period setting, they still stand up surprisingly well and don't feel all that dated. Double plus — that era of Brendan Fraser has never been more awesome.
