We didn't start the fire, no we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it. Hemingway, Eichmann, Stranger in a Strange Land… - Billy Joel
Billy Joel sees the importance of Robert A. Heinlein’s novel Stranger In A Strange Land and so does Syfy. In collaboration with Paramount Television and Universal Cable Productions, Syfy is bringing the critically acclaimed 1960s cultural phenomenon to a television near you. The novel was named one of eighty-eight “Books that Shaped America” by the US Library of Congress in 2012 and was given the Hugo Award in 1962.
Stranger tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a young man who travels to Earth after being raised by Martians… on Mars: picture Superman meets The Jungle Book. Valentine arrives on Earth to a post-third world war United States and is forced to adapt to and understand human culture. The novel plays on themes of the time such as free love and world peace and even predicted some of the other movements and messages that the 1960s culture dictated.
"From my point of view, Stranger in a Strange Land isn’t just a science-fiction masterpiece … it also happens to be one of my favorite books ever,” NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment chairman Bonnie Hammer said Tuesday in a statement. "The story is timeless and resonates more than ever in today’s world. As a fan, I can’t wait to see it come to life as a world-class television event.” Neither can we, Bonnie!
Stranger In A Strange Land joins Happy!, The Machine, Krypton and Brave New World, another classic sci-fi novel adaptation, on Syfy’s development slate.
